Reed Barrett Fanning (73) passed away 1/3/23. He worked at INL-CWI. He retired in 2011 after 20 years of service.

Takako Ugaki Nukaya (88) passed away 1/7/23. She worked at INL as an administrative assistant.

Leland ‘Lee’ Frances Morrow Jr (88) passed away 1/10/23. He worked at INL as a chemical Engineer. He worked at ICPP in Fuel Processing Operations and as a shift foreman and supervisor.

William ‘Billy’ Ned Day (58) passed away 1/11/23. He worked at INL as a carpenter and in D&D.

Henry Brock Barkley Jr (95) passed away 1/11/23. He worked at INL as an Electronics Engineer, He worked at Bendix as supervisor of the Space Power Section. He worked for NASA at the Plum Brook Station as Chief of the Reactor Division. He worked for Aerojet Nuclear Company, the prime contractor for the Department of Energy at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, as the Assistant General Manager for Power Reactors. He then held several positions at Babcock & Wilcox, including Manager of International Business and Director of Space and Defense Systems. He ended his career as a consultant for Ebasco, in charge of all reactor systems.

Gene Allen Scott (74) passed away 2/1/23. He worked at INL as an Electrical Engineer.

William John Denson, Sr. (89) passed away 2/2/23. John was named President of Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company in 1993 and became Director of the INEEL when Lockheed Martin won the consolidated INEEL contract in October 1994. He provided strategic direction, leadership and management for all INEEL programs, activities and employees until he retired in 2002.

Gary David Spaulding (87) passed away 2/5/23. He retired from Argonne National Lab.

Dennis Kay Olsen (65) passed away 2/5/23. He worked at the Naval Reactor Facility as an engineer.

Charles Welker Briggs (82) passed away 2/8/23. He worked at INL for 20 years as a computer systems analyst. He served as the IREA Program chairman for several years and was an active member at the time of his passing.

John Marvin Fisher (91) passed away 2/15/23. He worked at the Naval Reactor Facility for 35 years as an electrical engineer.

Ronald ‘Nick’ J. Wade (79) passed away 2/15/23. He worked for many years at Westinghouse, EG&G & INEL in Nuclear Waste Management.

Jerome ‘Jerry’ Grenz (80) passed away 2/16/23.

Donald Carl Borrowman (88) passed away 2/16/23. He worked at INL as an electrician.

Donald Clyde Bird (85) passed away 2/21/23.

LeRoy Carl Meyer (92) passed away 2/24/23. He started his Electrical Engineering career with EG&G as lead engineer and manager of various scientific programs including radiation effects on electronics, environmental programs, and the effect of aging electrical equipment at nuclear power plants. In 1977 he transferred to INEL where he supervised the nuclear power reactor fuel research program and studied the rods from Three Mile Island. He also taught electrical and computer engineering courses at the Idaho Falls campus for the University of Idaho. He retired in 1995 but continued to teach. LeRoy served in many capacities for IREA. Most recently he had served as membership chairman and was an active member at the time of his passing.

Lawrence Larsen (97) passed away 4/19/23. He worked at the Westinghouse nuclear facility where he worked half of his career. He worked at the Argonne National Laboratory as a mechanical engineer for the last part of his career.

Kenneth Somers Moor (81) passed away 4/19/23. He worked at INL as a Senior Advisory Scientist, Ecological Sciences. He had a passion for environmental research that began in college and extended from UNLV to the Nevada Test Site and ended at INL.

Terry Lee Meikle (70) passed away 4/22/23. He worked at Argonne National Laboratories, INEEL and continued until his retirement from Battelle Energy Alliance in 2014.

Richard “Dick” Boyer (81) passed away 4/27/23. He worked at INL and then moved to Carlsbad, NM to become the first Radiation Safety Manager at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). He retired as a National Radiological Assistance Team Leader.

David Leon Rowsell (61) passed away 5/20/23. He worked at INL at ATR and MFC where he spent most of his 32-year career. He retired as the ATR Plant and Project Engineering Division Director.

Ella Lee Ellis (83) passed away 5/21/23. In 1976 Ella went to work at Argonne National Laboratory-West, and then in 1987 she moved to the Chemical Processing Plant (CCP) where she worked in document control and security. She retired from Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Company in 1995. Ella was an active IREA member and provided many lovely acrylic paintings for our silent auctions at IREA Banquets.

Bruce Arnold Wheeler (96) passed away 5/23/23.

Mary (Betscher) Booker (79) passed away 5/25/23. Mary dedicated her career as a Health and Safety Engineer to ensuring the safety of the people she worked with and the community at large. Her work frequently took her away from home to locations like Johnston Atoll in the South Pacific, Idaho, South Carolina, Alabama, Dubai and Russia. She also served as part of the Kosovo Peacekeeping Mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and during her career she was awarded the Commander’s Medal for service at four different military base installations.

Valerie Lee Putman (68) passed away 5/26/23. She worked at INL as a Mechanical Engineer for EG&G (Physics Org.) in the late 1970’s and early ’80s, then transferred to ICPP and worked for ENICO and WINCO in the Criticality Safety Section in the 1980s and 1990s. 

William Kevin Van Orden (62) passed away 5/29/23. He worked at INL as a security guard, firefighter and EMT. He retired as a captain.

Richard ‘Dick’ Wagner (90) passed away 5/30/23. He worked at INL in physics. He was involved with Relap5, a computer program used to simulate and analyze the behavior of nuclear reactors under various conditions.

June 2023

Frank Edward Dingman (83) passed away 6/1/23. He worked and retired from INL-EG&G in micrographics.

Lynn Mangum (90) passed away 6/2/23. He worked at INL as a process operator for 39 years.

Robert Martin Horgos (91) passed away 6/4/23.

Frank Clayton Holmes (81) passed away 6/9/23. He worked at the Department of Energy in 1991, in the New Production Reactor Program, and later the Office of Environmental Management. He then transferred to Idaho Operations office in 1997 where he completed 46 years of government service, retiring in 2005. He returned to INL in 2006 as a consultant to assist in the life extension of the Lab’s Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). After years he retired again to enjoy the quiet life in Idaho Falls.

Dale Orin Batt (65) passed away 6/14/23. He worked at INL for 38 years software development and Cybersecurity where he managed Information Technology and Cybersecurity organizations. He also taught Information Technology classes at night school at the Eastern Idaho Technical College (EITC) and College of Eastern Idaho (CEI) for 34 years.

Garth Rafael Thomas (85) passed away 6/15/23. He worked and retired from INL-EG&G as a quality inspector.

Nan-Pin Chien (76) passed away 6/15/23.

William Alonzo Jones (90) passed away 6/16/23. He worked at the Naval Reactor Facility (NRF) for over 35 years.

Julie L. Lytle (79) passed away 6/17/23. She began her career at Argonne National Laboratory as a secretary, then worked her way up to a Senior Business/Operations Specialist with EG&G Idaho, Inc. in their legal department.

Carol Mobley (76) passed away 6/18/23.

Carlan Kay Mullen (76) passed away 6/19/23. He worked at INL as a project engineer helping solve problems associated with Nuclear Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management.

Donald Kudera (89) passed away 6/20/23.  He worked as a Chemist at the Rocky Flats Plant before transferring to the INL.  He worked in the transuranic waste program and was involved with characterizing past waste disposals.

Mark Don Argyle (66) passed away 6/21/23. He worked at INL-IEC, as a chemical engineer.

Kurt Frank Smith (60) passed away 6/21/23. He worked at INL as a Decontamination Technician with INTEC and his “get things done” attitude brought him up through the company for 30+ years. He then worked with the J.C. Hall Company managing large Perlite insulation projects. Kurt adventured off to Mississippi for some deep-sea fishing and work with Industrial Construction Inc. (ICI) on contracts with his life-long friend upgrading space shuttle stands. Finally, he returned to where it all started out at the INL as a Technical Representative Subcontractor with Navarro Research and Engineering working with the Idaho Environmental Coalition where he demonstrated his profound knowledge and leadership skills on a daily basis.

Jimmy Ray Mason (82) passed away 6/29/23. In 1985 he went to work for Argonne National Lab as the Director of Security, retiring in 2001.

Marti Louise (Carroll) Casper (76) passed away 7/16/23.

Ray Ottley Haroldson (95) passed away 7/17/23. He worked at Argonne National Lab Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-1). Unfortunately, his clearance took longer than expected and he missed the start-up of the first ever electricity from nuclear power by 2 weeks; however, he was the person who gave the command to flip the switch that powered the City of Arco for the United States’ claim to be the first to use nuclear power for peaceful lighting of a civilian community. His work took him to Clearwater, FL, Naperville, Illinois and Washington DC. Eventually, he worked for the Nuclear regulatory commission and just before retirement, he performed regulatory safety checks for various nuclear power plants throughout the country.

His professional journey took him to various corners of the United States, including Washington, Idaho, upstate New York, Arizona, and Texas. Throughout his life he achieved a degree in Nuclear Science Engineering and went on to complete his Masters in Instructional Technology.

Charles Aquilina (78) passed away 10/3/23.

Normajean Kontes (88) passed away 10/6/23. She worked for the Atomic Energy Commission at the Test Area North Facility, as a secretary for the Nuclear Aircraft Engine Project.

Helen Wilson passed away 10/7/23.

Larry John Davis (86) passed away 10/8/23. He worked at INL for 34 years.

William Yarbrough passed away 10/12/23.

Michael Glenn Bush (62) passed away 10/12/23. He worked at INL as a Network Security Engineer.

Dave Klingler (77) passed away 10/14/23.

Robert Cherry passed away 10/14/23. He earned his PhD in Engineering from Rice University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering from MIT. He went on to contribute significantly to the field through his groundbreaking research, garnering patents, and writing numerous  papers still cited by engineering firms and universities across the globe. He worked in the INL Chemistry group and was known for his innovative and pioneering work in CO2 sequestration and other projects related to nuclear energy. His dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge led him to contributions that will continue to influence and inspire generations of researchers.

Frank Childs III (86) passed away 10/16/23. He was a Cal Tech-trained Mechanical Engineer and true rocket scientist.

Michael “Mickey” Alan King (67) passed away 10/20/23. He worked at INL as an operating engineer and surveyor for many years.

Lyle Schwartz (70) passed away 10/26/23.

William “Bill” Grof (78) passed away 10/28/23. In 1974, he accepted a job with Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He worked for Bettis thirty-three years, thirty-one of which were spent working at a Naval Reactor Facility located near Idaho Falls, Idaho. He retired in 2008.

Karen Wendt (68) passed away 10/28/23. She worked as a technician in the Materials Science group specializing in Non-Destructive Testing.

Richard Earl Stephens (95) passed away 11/3/23. He worked at INL as a bus driver.

Mary Veronica Bernadette (Fleming) Willcox (68) passed away 11/11/23. She took a job with the Department of Energy as a Physical Scientist working to ensure the proper cleanup of radioactive material at the Idaho National Lab. She was deeply passionate about her work and retired from the DOE after 26 years of dedicated service. She continued in various consultation roles as a recognized expert in her field for a short time following her retirement.

January 2022

Joseph Henry Keller (87) passed away 1/2/22. He worked at INL at the chemical plant as a chemist. He retired a second time in 2019.

Robert Melvin Brugger (92) passed away 1/2/22. His career as a nuclear physicist began with a summer job in 1951 as an electronics technician at White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico, and a “Summer Scientist” at E.I. DuPont deNemours in the summer of 1953 in Waynesboro, Virginia. After receiving his PhD in 1955, he and Barbara moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where he worked for the US Atomic Energy Commission at the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) until 1974. He began as a Research Physicist, moving up through the years to become Manager of the Nuclear Technology Division for Aerojet Nuclear. From 1962-1963 he moved to England for an assignment with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Research Establishment on behalf of the US Atomic Energy Commission and Phillips Petroleum Company. In 1974, Bob accepted a position as the Director of the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) in Columbia, Missouri, and in August of that year he moved to Columbia to start the next phase of his career. During this time, Bob also served as a Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Missouri until 1991, working primarily with graduate students. From 1981-1982 he took a Sabbatical to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He took an appointment at the Medical Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York, in 1990, and in August of 1991, he retired from the University of Missouri, becoming Professor Emeritus of the Nuclear Engineering Dept. He worked as Senior Scientist at Brookhaven from 1991-1993, where he was coordinator of the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Program (BNTC), an emerging treatment for cancerous tumors. From 1993-1999, Bob worked as a private consultant, and as a part-time employee for the McClellan Nuclear Radiation Center Reactor in Sacramento, California. Throughout his life, he continued to be fascinated by various forms of energy and followed the development and possibilities of Neutron Capture Therapy with great interest.

Dr. Billy Ray Dickey (90) passed away 1/12/22. He worked at INL-ICCP as Manager of Process Development in the 1960’s, 70’s and early 80’s, and later as Manager of Production Operations. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering at A&M in 1964. In 1987 transferred to the Hanford Nuclear site. In 1990, he accepted a transfer to the Savannah River facility in Aiken, South Carolina.

James ‘Jim’ Merrill Larson (84) passed away 1/27/22. He worked at Argonne National Laboratory for 27 years.  His most notable professional achievements included nuclear instrument development at Argonne’s Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) from the facility’s start up until his retirement from the lab in 1995. In addition to his engineering career, Jim was an affiliate professor at the night campus for the University of Idaho at the Idaho Falls Center for Higher Education from 1969 until 1999. After retirement, Jim worked as a consultant instrument developer and donated his time to the Nuclear Engineering Department at Idaho State University nearly to the time of his death.

George Thomas Hames (85) passed away 2/28/22. He worked at INL as a Security Police Officer, keeping safe members of the Nuclear Engineering Program, including high ranking Naval Personnel and anyone who entered the site. This was his dream job and he took great pride in his duties, performing security checks of vehicles and busses, patrolling the INL monitoring for traffic violations, and deterring potential security threats. George was respected by fellow officers, took great pride in his work environment, and often planted flowers at his security check point and went out of his way to make sure desert animals did not perish due to lack of food and water. He’d often tell Jan and his kids funny stories of all the different animal interactions on the Arco desert and would tell friends one of his important duties on the INL was “keeping peace amongst the animals.” George was a dedicated professional, often taking overtime shifts, covering for his crew, and working additional night shifts after spending holidays with his family. George loved working in the quiet solitude and seeing all the different wildlife that visited him during his shifts. One of the things he loved about his profession was the physical demands and the various certifications required to be an INL security guard including Weapons Training, Physical Fitness Testing, SWAT Certification, and Doppler Radar Operation. Approaching retirement, George would tell stories of being able to compete with the younger guards. He retired after 18 years of honorable service at the INL in June 2001.

Richard Allen Rankin (67) passed away 6/12/22. Richard enjoyed a historic career as a Technology Transfer Professional with more than 35 years of experience in the development, management, and commercialization of innovative technology. He served in several roles in technology transfer and commercialization, including most recently the Director of the Innovation and Partnerships Office at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and previously at Idaho National Laboratory as the head of the INL Technology Transfer Office, as well as managing the Licensing, Business Development, Intellectual Property and International activities of the Laboratory, and as a Principal Investigator and Manager in the R&D organizations. A recipient of the INL Lifetime Achievement Award for Inventorship, he was inducted into the INL Inventors Hall of Fame in 2003. Amongst others, he has received an R&D 100 Award, a George Westinghouse Innovation Award for the Westinghouse Corporations’ top inventors, and a George Westinghouse Signature Award for engineering excellence.

Dr. Theodore Roosevelt Hatcher (74) passed away 6/18/22. He began his corporate career at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in Idaho Falls, ID as the Manager of Advanced Methods Research & Development where his team’s efforts resulted in industry leading research in the early development of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Analysis in the 1980’s. He then served 15 plus years at Lucent Technologies/AT&T Bell Laboratories where he was Director of Switch Software Development & Laboratory Operations. He retired from Lucent in the year 2000 and moved to Florida as Chief Operating Officer of Technology Control Services and then to Intel in New Jersey as General Manager. Upon his second retirement, he moved back to South Florida where he resided until his death.

Her work focused on helping to build a sustainable energy plan for Idaho and the nation, but she was particularly interested in nuclear energy and economic development. Her work with the Fort Peck Indian Reservation led her to be inducted as an honorary member of the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribe in Montana. Ann was an IREA active member and board member serving as social chairman at the time of her passing. She planned many banquets and summer picnics.

Robert ‘Bob’ Glenn Butler (90) passed away 11/26/22. He worked at Argonne National Lab as a security officer for 33 years.

Gloria Carol Blanchard Valenti (75) passed away 11/28/22.

Robert ‘Bob’ Edward Korenke (81) passed away 11/28/22. He worked at INL beginning in 1965 at the National Reactor Testing Station. He started at the Engineering Test Reactor (ETR) working on the testing and development of the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Systems for the Submarines. He also worked as a Mechanical Engineer, but ultimately became a Project Manager in Waste Management, holding a leadership role. During his 40 years of service, he was responsible for several Nuclear Energy related programs and projects for the Department of Energy. He retired in May 2005 as a Senior Project Manager responsible for the INL NE/DOE HQ Project for Advanced Gas Reactor Particle Fuel Development.

Mark C. Pettet (58) passed away 1/2/21. He was an active employee of INL, working in Org J211.

James Andrew Paul Dowalo (74) passed away 1/3/21. He worked at INL working in nuclear waste containment & later with Leak Testing Specialists. Many of those who worked with him considered him “a legend” in the field of nuclear leak testing.  Jim holds a patent, with the Department of Energy, for an internal nuclear pressure sensor to aid in leak detection.  Jim was honored with an award from the United States of America Department of Energy for his invention in 2010.

Harlan ‘Harley’ Fred Vollman (84) passed away 1/4/21. He worked at INL as a heavy equipment operator.

Albert Lee Campbell (84) passed away 1/6/22.

Edward James Hallinan (77) passed away 1/8/21. He worked for EG&G from 1981 to 1985 in Tech Publications and from 1986 to 1987 for WINCO in their Safety Analysis group. He then worked for Savannah River (SRS) starting in 1988 and retired from SRS in 2009.

William A. Emel (80) passed away 1/9/21. He worked at the Chem Plant starting mid-1960’s, working as a radiochemist. Later he worked in ENICO and WINCO, as the manager of the Radiochemistry Branch. He left INL in late 1984-85.

Richard R. Wright (91) passed away 1/10/21.  He had a life-long and dedicated career working for the Department of Energy (DOE-ID) in Engineering and Construction Management. For most of that time he was Chief of the Reactor & Research/Energy Projects Branch.

Harold Don Gronbeck (85) passed away 1/11/21. He worked for GE-KAPL (Knowles Atomic Power Lab) but was stationed at TRA as the GE-KAPL sponsor’s representative to the ATR experiments group. Both GE-KAPL and Westinghouse-Bettis had representatives at TRA monitoring irradiation testing of their fuel specimens in ATR. He retired in 1995. 

Donnell Alan Shehane (61) passed away 1/11/21. He worked for FLUOR as a Training Specialist.

Roger Graham Young (86) passed away 1/12/21. He was employed by Combustion Engineering located in Windsor, Connecticut. The company sent him for additional training which led him to relocate to the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho Falls, Idaho around 1959-60. In 1961, Roger was involved in the aftermath of a nuclear accident and was instrumental in the recovery of three bodies.

Robert LeRoy Collins (95) passed away 1/13/21. He worked at INL as a Journeyman Electrician.

Kenneth H. Henry (79) passed away 1/16/21. Kenneth lived in Aberdeen, WA where he worked for Rayonier Inc.; Kennewick, WA where he worked for Rockwell/Hanford; and Idaho Falls where he worked for EG&G Waste Management (WM) from 1989 to 1995.

Mark T. Barnes (62) passed away 1/16/21. He worked at NRF for 20+ years as a journeyman painter.

Kerwin S. Pierce (63) passed away 1/17/21. Kerwin began his 30-year career working for the Department of Energy in 1989. His first job out of school was with EG&G-Energy Measurements at the Nevada Test Site. He transferred to Colorado where he worked at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site until 2002. He retired from Fluor Idaho (INL) in May of 2019.

Emory ‘Sam’ V. Mobley (92) passed away 1/17/21. He worked at INL from 1959-1997, working at EG&G in a variety or groups – Thermal Fuels Behavior Programs, Power Reactor Programs, and Nuclear Safety & Engineering. Sam was in a work-study program at the White Sands Proving Ground, at New Mexico University. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Washington state to the University of Washington work-study program at the Bomark project with Boeing aircraft. Sam obtained his Master’s degree in engineering in 1959. The family then moved to Idaho in August 1959, where he was hired at the site, the AEC, as it was known then. Sam retired from INEL in 1997, after working nearly 40 years in his field.

Gordon W. Olsen (86) passed away 1/18/21. He worked at INL as an engineer for more than 40 years where he worked on control systems for nuclear reactors and worked on engineering projects for the space shuttle as well as data management systems at Hill Airforce Base.

Fred Pope (95) passed away 1/18/21. He worked for Phillips Petroleum in Borger, TX, and later transferred to Idaho until his retirement in 1983. He worked at EG&G from 1981-1985 in Water Reactor Research Test Facilities at TAN, and in Personnel Assurance Tech Support (PATS) in 1986.

Elmo Elias Keller (90) passed away 1/18/21. In 1957 Elmo began a successful career at INL, starting as a custodian and gradually working his way upward through the ranks with study and experience to become an efficient and well thought of Safety Engineer.

Kim L. Duncan (65) passed away 1/19/21. She worked at INL as a compensation analyst, helping the lab reach their goals by putting her many talents to use bettering the organization and making strides in helping them hire the best minds.

Robert Wayne Emery (73) passed away 2/4/21. He worked at INL beginning in 1982 as a security guard. He impressed the upper management so much that he was promoted into a management position. He was later in charge of all of the security processes there and after a 30-year career, retired in 2014.

David Lawrence Parks (74) passed away 2/20/21. He worked at INL for 40 years as a Project Manager over Nuclear Threat Reduction.

Kendall Magill (90) passed away 2/22/21.He worked for EG&G at PBF through 1985 and then (and in Waste Management Programs at TAN and retiring from INL in late 1980s.

Denzel K. Jenson (89) passed away 2/23/21. He worked at INL beginning in 1953 in the Radiological Engineering field. He was manager of the ICPP Health Physics group for many years. He moved to LLNL in 1987 as a WINCO representative on the joint WINCO-LLNL SIS Project. After 2 years (’87-’89) the SIS Project was cancelled, and Denzel elected to stay at LLNL.  He retired after working a total of 43 years including his time at INL and LLNL.

Arthur Paul Roeh (86) passed away 3/24/21. He worked for various subcontractors with the Department of Energy in Chemical Engineering. At INL he worked at ICPP for various contractors in the 1960s and 1970s and was involved in R&D for fuel reprocessing, especially on ROVER graphite fuel. He worked for EG&G in 1981 on Energy Programs, then he spent about a year working for Fluor-Daniels in California. He returned to INL working for ENICO and WINCO from 1983 to 1986, returned to Fluor-Daniels, returned to INL working for WINCO from 1989 to 1991, and then Fluor Daniels until he retired.

Van Gene Bagley (88) passed away 5/2/21. He worked for INL as a bus driver, driving 2 million miles without an accident.

Stephen Edward Everette (80) passed away 5/3/21. He worked for EG&G in Earth & Life Sciences and in Waste Programs until 1985.

Karen (Haderlie) Covert (80) passed away 5/3/21. She worked for the Department of Energy as a custodian.

George Lowell Smith (92) passed away 5/5/21. He worked for INL as an electrical engineer.

Antone Stefano Cominotti (64) passed away 5/12/21. He worked at INL (FLUOR) as a mechanic.

Glen Reed Longhurst (77) passed away 5/12/21. He worked at INL for 30 years, as a Mechanical Engineer. He focused his academic preparation in aerospace and nuclear energy.  He was literally a “Rocket Scientist.” His career contributions at the Lab included pioneering work in beryllium technology research and tritium safety. In 1995, he and a colleague founded the IEA International Workshop on Beryllium. This organization continues as an industry leader in beryllium research. In 2019, Glen received the Mario Dalle Donne Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in Fusion. 

Charles Todd Elverson (32) passed away 5/13/21. He was an active employee and worked in Org B674. He was a Geospatial Data Scientist and Software Developer at the Environmental & Geological Engineering Department. He earned his master’s in forest hydrology from University of Minnesota, where he also earned his bachelor’s in environmental science and conservation biology.

Janet Wilkinson (89) passed away 5/13/21. She worked at Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) for several years as a secretary.

Lois Joann Coyte Cissel (92) passed away 5/17/21. She managed the cafeteria at Westinghouse.

Graeme C. Galbraith (90) passed away 5/18/21. He worked for Westinghouse, who operated the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, staffing their second prototype plant at the Naval Reactor Facility. Graeme retired in 1989, as the chief refueling engineer servicing the four naval reactors then operating at NRF, which established the processes for refueling the nuclear aircraft carriers, the USS Enterprise and the USS Nimitiz.

Artie Seth Waters (62) passed away 5/20/21. He worked at INL as a carpenter, and retired in 2016.

Dana Keith Morton (69) passed away 5/21/21. He worked at INL as a Mechanical Engineer. He contributed greatly to the solutions of safely storing spent fuel, as he performed extensive, and often groundbreaking work as a Section III American Society of Mechanical Engineering Code member.

Elton Lynn Call (80) passed away 6/1/21. He worked at INL as a Project Manager in Security and Head of Security at MK until retirement in 2000.

Julie James Hand (55) passed away 6/2/21. She worked at INL beginning in 1990, she had a number of accomplishments while working at the INL but was most proud of her U.S. patent for a zero-headspace extractor.

Robert L. Hoffman (58) passed away 6/5/21. He was an active INL employee, working in Org H610. Bob started his career in nuclear science working in such places as Tennessee, New York, and Idaho. He spent 13 years working at the Lab as a research and development engineering scientist.

David John Forker (73) passed away 6/5/21. He worker at INL-EG&G as a project manager, retiring in 1999.

John Robert Cox (75) passed away 6/6/21. He worked in Performance Assurance Tech Support, Enviromental Safety & Quality, and the New Production Reactor (NPR) groups over his time at INL.

Gail Ernest Bingham (86) passed away 6/16/21. He worked at INL as Manager of Major Projects at ICPP for ENICO and WINCO, most notably the New Waste Calcining Facility (NWCF). He continued as a senior engineering manager until his retirement, after which he consulted with the Department of Energy for several years.

Robert Leo McVean (97) passed away 6/21/21. He worked at Argonne National Lab at the reactor testing site beginning in 1957.

Edward Allen Jennrich (69) passed away 6/24/21. Ed was an Engineering Officer on the USS Grayling submarine and traveled the world, including a trip under the North Pole.  He received the Gold Dolphins Achievement medal, the Expeditionary medal, and the National Defense Service medal.  Post his time in the military, Ed worked as an Operations Manager at AECOM/URS.  Co-workers acknowledged Ed as a leader, mentor and person who can be relied upon.  Ed retired in 2017 after 37 years.

Theodore ‘Ted’ Kinnaman (78) passed away 7/21/21. He worked at INL as a mechanical engineer and built his skills into a 34-year career supporting all manner of projects at the INL site. He was especially proud of his work on the Engineering Test Reactor sodium loop project.

Arnold ‘Ron’ Leslie Ayers Jr. (81) passed away 7/28/21. Ron worked most of his career within the nuclear energy field, first with Ebasco Services in New York City until 1976 and then out at the INL site for different companies. While he mostly worked locally, his job included travel to Pennsylvania, Texas, and Kazakhstan. He was especially proud of his work in cleaning up the Three Mile Island reactor, and in later efforts to recover and store spent reactor fuel from around the world.

Patrick R Dugan (89) passed away 8/14/21. He worked at INL as a Science Fellow and Director of the Center for Bioprocessing Technology. Dr. Dugan earned a Ph.D. (Microbiology) from Syracuse University and from 1964 until 1987 was a faculty member at the Ohio State University where he held a variety of position (Professor-Microbiology, Chair-Department of Microbiology, Dean-College of Biological Sciences and Professor Emeritus).

James ‘Jim’ Findley Shaffer (88) passed away 9/1/21. He worked at INL for various contractors between 1959 and 1993, he was a Geological Engineer.

Gail Adele Gerling Cordes Vachon (83) passed away 9/3/21. She worked at INL in Computer Science at a time when a computer took up a whole room. She worked in the nuclear industry until her retirement in 2002. During her career, she published several papers in the area of neural networks, multi-variate control and patterns, and intelligent systems. She was active in the American Nuclear Society and was president of the Idaho chapter for a time.

Roy Lee Flowers (86) passed away 9/4/21. He worked at INL as a demolition welder.

John Patrick Morgan (88) passed away 9/4/21. He worked at INL for 43 years and worked at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP), retiring in 1996. He was instrumental in obtaining many patents during his career as an engineer.

Scot B. Cox (70) passed away 9/6/21. He worked at NRF as an Operations Manager for 30 years, retiring in 2009.

Glenna Dene Williams Harris Transtrum (91) passed away 9/7/21. She worked for INL starting as a secretary and retired as a liaison in Public Relations, working for over 20 years.

Blair Daniel Johnson (100) passed away 9/9/21. He worked at INL, he helped start up the Materials Testing Reactor at the National Testing Reactor site where he worked for 25 years as a Health Physicist, retiring in 1976.

Garry Richard Burke (61) passed away 9/11/21. He worked at AMWTP as a Radiation Technician Supervisor, retiring in 2020.

Herman Larry Spilker (88) passed away 9/11/21. He worked at INL beginning with his legal career as a staff attorney for Idaho Nuclear Company. He was promoted to General Counsel and served in that capacity for several subsequent INL contractors. He would never admit this, but upon his retirement in 1995, he was world renowned in his specialty of Government Contract Law as it relates to the nuclear industry. His talents were often sought after until he decided to retire for good. Along the way, Dad was also a University Professor and taught Government Contract and Labor Law for the University of Idaho for 42 years.

Roy Reynolds (80) passed away 9/17/21. He worked at INL as a graphic designer despite offers for jobs at such places as Disney. The job enabled Roy to continue his artwork at home. His INEL career earned him many awards for his graphic design work. The Department of Interior chose Roy’s watercolors to illustrate the Montana Bison Management Plan. He retired after 25 years of service.

Harry Paul Mann (83) passed away 10/1/21. He began his storied career as a U.S. Naval Officer when he was commissioned as an Ensign in 1959. He was accepted into the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program by Admiral Hyman Rickover in 1961, he dedicated the next eight years preparing for his career as an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO). After receiving a Master of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Penn State University in 1969, he was given his first EDO staff assignment as a Ship Superintendent at Charleston Naval Shipyard. Steady promotions and increased responsibilities followed, with assignments in Virginia Beach, VA, Idaho Falls, ID, Bremerton, WA, Washington, D.C. and Portsmouth, VA. His roles during this time included Repair Officer, Instructor, Detailer, and Production Officer. In 1985, at the rank of Captain (0-6), he reached the pinnacle of his career when he was awarded the prestigious position of Commanding Officer, Mare Island Naval Shipyard, in Vallejo, CA. After retiring from his 30-year Navy career in 1989, Harry worked in key leadership roles for the Defense Contractor EG&G, including General Manager of Rocky Flats in Colorado. He retired from EG&G in 1995.

Later in life his interests grew to include the development and application of a wide range of other technologies, and he applied his talents in technology transfer at the Purdue University Research Foundation and then at the Idaho National Laboratory, where he was awarded a patent.

John Lloyd Griffith II (92) passed away 10/12/21. He worked for Westinghouse and the Atomic Energy Commission. He oversaw numerous alternate clean energy programs, including hydroelectric power, geothermal energy, and biomass energy.

Elva Laura Scott DeRoche (96) passed away 10/16/21. She worked at INL around 1967 and was the first to become a female manager in the Plant Services.

James ‘Jim’ Lee Gregory (73) passed away 10/26/21. He worked at INL (FLUOR). He served as a Naval Reactors Technical Assistant at the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1988. After retiring from the Navy, Jim held several responsible positions at INL. He served as the Safety Oversight Review Committee Chairman and the Radiological Controls Manager at the Advanced Test Reactor. At the Idaho Cleanup Project he chaired the Performance Evaluation Board and the Independent Safety Review Committee. Because of his extensive experience at nuclear facilities, Jim performed and lead numerous independent reviews at Department of Energy Nuclear facilities. Jim also taught many courses on leadership, communication, and teamwork throughout the United States.

Alverta ‘Amy’ M. Miller (81) passed away 1/21/20. She worked at INL at ICPP processing personnel security clearances from 1/14/80-1/30/95.

Dale Gray (94) passed away 1/28/20. Dale was an early pioneer in developing nuclear power reactors. He first worked in the Idaho Reactor Research Facility. Because of his skills and personality to work well with others, he was assigned to help install the first reactor in a nuclear submarine, the Nautalus. Next, he was assigned to work on the Three Mile Island nuclear residential power plant. This work then took him to Texas to manage the installation of a nuclear reactor in the first merchant ship Savannah. The country was then ready for attempts to develop nuclear rocket engines, which was done outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. His final pioneering activity involved developing alternate methods of capturing energy from nuclear reactions, he finished this work in the Tri Cities Washington.

Charles ‘Chuck’ T. Bernhard (93) passed away 1/30/20. He began working for American Standard Corporation and later for Westinghouse at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, PA. He transferred with Westinghouse to the Naval Reactors Facility at the Idaho National Laboratory outside of Idaho Falls, ID, where he retired in 1988.

Alfred ‘Erwin’ Higley (85) passed away 2/7/20. He worked at INL for 27 years as a chemist.

John R. Chappell (85) passed away 2/7/20. He worked at INL from 9/29/75-1/6/93, at the Loss of Fluid Test Facility (LOFT) for three years before transferring to hydropower. There, he served as a liaison between the Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE-funded hydropower projects across the country. John was active in IREA in its early years, coordinating group travel activities and chairing the consumer affairs committee until 2004.

Shirlene A. Marler Lords (84) passed away 2/18/20. She worked at the Atomic Energy Commission for a few years.

John F. Hanek (74) passed away 2/23/20. He worked at INL (CWI) from 2/3/86-2007. He spent his entire career working in the Nuclear Power, industry, working at Duane Arnold Nuclear Station in Iowa, Susquehanna Nuclear Station in Pennsylvania, Hope Creek Nuclear Station in New Jersey, and at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). He was certified by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as an Operator Licensing Examiner and conducted NRC operator licensing exams for 13 years at over 30 Commercial Nuclear Power Stations. He retired from the INL in 2007 and starting in 2009 took on several consulting assignments for Epsilon Systems Solutions retiring again in 2016.

Dale B. Harris (89) passed away 3/7/20. He worked at INL from 6/21/76-1/30/95 as a Quality Engineer, Industrial Engineer and salesman for employers including: Convair Astronautics, Martin-Marietta Corp., Aerojet General Corp., Lew Williams Chevrolet, All Car Leasing, General Atomic, EG&G Idaho National Laboratory, Exxon Nuclear Idaho Co. and Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Co. While he was a project manager in Quality Assurance Engineering at Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Company, Dale got in his morning run chasing after the bus.

Norman ‘Brad’ Stockton (64) passed away 3/8/20. He worked at INL 8/29/83 until an unknown date, then rehired 8/30/04 and retired 4/4/13.

James (Jim) A. Carter (84) passed away 3/10/20. His career at the AEC-DOE site in Idaho Falls in 1958. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Co at the 3 reactors ETR, MTR and ATR. Prior to his retirement in 1995, he was working in the robotics program.

Norman Del Fowler (73) passed away 3/11/20. He worked at INL from 11/17/80-4/14/11, as a security officer.

Dee Edwin Larsen (78) passed away 3/12/20. He worked at INL from 3/1/76-10/2/83. He worked for IBM and helped found Amdahl Corporation. He then began work at the INEL. Dee was among the pioneers developing the microprocessor. 

Charles E. Guy (82) passed away 3/12/20. He worked for Mobil Oil in Libya from 1963-1966. He came back to the States to finish his masters’ degree in Nuclear Engineering. He then took a job with Westinghouse in 1967. He worked for various shipyards across the country throughout his career, then settled in Idaho and worked for the INL until his retirement in 1998.

Ronald C. Rope (65) passed away 4/17/20. He worked at INL beginning in the mid 1980’s, for 24 years, as an Environmental Scientist.

Richard J. Hernandez (86) passed away 4/20/20. He worked at NRF beginning in 1985 and retiring in 1996, after a long career as an ironworker.

James ‘Jim’ Milton Jackson (64) passed away 4/28/20. He worked at INL for several contractors for almost 30 years, retiring in 2017.

Hundley Merton Kline (99) passed away 5/1/20. He worked at INL as a mechanical engineer of about 45 years. He worked on the NASA Mercury Mission, designed parts of aircraft landing gears, breaks for cars, and ended his career at INL in 1992.

Zane C. Hall (94) passed away 5/6/20. He worked at NRF accepting a job in 1955 as the Director of Security where he remained until 1986 when he retired.

Harlin K. Summers (84) passed away 5/11/20. He worked at INL starting work at the National Reactor Testing Station in 1961 and progressed through several different contractors and name changes as maintenance planner and telephone design engineer until he found the “best job in the world” as a tour guide taking visitors to site locations and helping them understand the complexities of the varied operations. He retired in 1998, but returned part-time until 2004.

Milton Holmes passed away 5/15/20. He worked at INL in the Photo Lab from 1957-1975.

John (Jan) Cusimano (88) passed away 5/19/20. He worked at INL as a physicist for 37 years.

William Thomas Balmer (78) passed away 5/20/20. He worked from 1981-1995 for EG&G in Business Computing, Information Services, and Computer Operations & Data Processing, all at the Computer Science Center (CSC).

Kerry A. Hersley (75) passed away 5/20/20. She worked at INL, beginning her career as a secretary for Aerojet-Nuclear. She worked her way up to an executive buyer for EG&G and Lockheed-Martin, then transitioned to a procurement agent for Bechtel, Battelle, CH2M Hill and Fluor.

Scott Doman (59) passed away 5/24/20. He worked at INL as a Radiation Tech, and eventually took the position as Radiation Safety Site Manager at a Department of Energy facility in Paducah, KY.

Kent Dale Willford (75) passed 5/25/20. He worked at INL as a RadCon Tech for 29 years.

Joseph M. Gasidlo (84) passed away 5/30/20. He worked at Argonne National Laboratory for 35 years as an experimental physicist.

Patricia L. Miller (87) passed away 6/4/20. She worked as a secretary for the Naval Reactor Facility for a few short years before becoming a full-time homemaker.

Kermit Clark (98) passed away 6/8/20. He worked at INL at the test facility as a maintenance technician.

Douglas P. Baker (75) passed away 6/14/20. He worked for INL driving bus and retired in 2006.

Edna ‘Eddie’ B. Hales (90) passed away 6/17/20. She worked at Argonne National Laboratory for 17 years, retiring in 1993.

Charles J. Clark (82) passed away 6/18/20. He worked at INL until his retirement in 1996, studying in the vocational electronics program.

Evonna C. Hammon (84) passed away 6/18/20. She worked at INL as a punch card operator on one of the new computers.

William ‘Bill’ F. Steele (56) passed away 6/19/20. He worked at INL for 33 years. He began his career in 1986 at the Specific Manufacturing Capability (SMC) in process development and engineering. He later moved to the Project Management Office (PMO) and had 12 years in that arena. Recently he managed the new Research and Collaboration Building at MFC.

Virginia C. Moore (82) passed away 6/22/20. She worked for EG&G’s Waste Management division and then moved to Engineering and Project Management working there until she left the site in 1987.

Gary McLaughlin (64) passed away 6/27/20. He started at INL in 1990 working in Engineering at WCB and later at Nuclear Research and Engineering at TRA.

Orangella Arnetta “Netta” Hagan (72) passed away 7/4/20. She worked at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and Westmark Credit Union.

Stanley T. Fenn (76) passed away 7/3/20. He began his career at INL with Argonne as a janitor, then pursued his degree in machine design and ended up as a project manager. He retired in 2000 after a 35-year career.

Don Zufelt (88) passed away 7/8/20. He worked at INL as a Nuclear Reactor Operator until his retirement in 1996, he began his work there in 1960.

Richard Rigg (75) passed away 7/17/20. He worked in nuclear engineering research at Bettis Atomic Power Lab in Pennsylvania, the NRF and in the late 1970’s he started working for Argonne National Lab-West in Idaho Falls. He found his niche in designing, manufacturing and testing remotely operated equipment in harsh environments and creating new tools for performing remote operations.

Darrell D. Patterson (78) passed away 7/19/20. He worked at INL, Westinghouse/Aerojet Nuclear Corp/TAN, and Engineering Inc. (EI) as a Quality Control Engineer and manager until his retirement in 2002.

David A. Rucks (67) passed away 7/22/20. He worked at INL for 15 years.

Robert G. Berg (58) passed away 7/25/20. He was a seismic monitoring site technician, spending countless days traveling to, inspecting, and maintaining remote seismic monitoring stations scattered across the Idaho Wilderness. He worked with the INL to keep Idahoans safe from potential nuclear disasters and Yellowstone eruptions by making sure the seismic functioned smoothly at all times.

Jay D. Green (92) passed away 7/25/20.

Ronald M. Savage (82) passed away 7/27/20. He was hired by A.E.C. fire department at the N.R.T.S. site. He made a career of fire service, working his way up through the ranks and in a few years became Chief of the department. He retired in July of 1988 after 33 years of government service.

Christian ‘Chris’ Dahl (66) passed away 7/30/20. He worked at INL from 1978-2017.  He worked as a chemical engineer supporting fuel reprocessing at ICPP for several years.  Later he was manager of a Systems Analysis group in the WINCO Applied Technology Dept., doing chemical process modeling.

Jerry Kent Gray (86) passed away 8/7/20. He worked at INL from 1955-1992 working as an electrician.

Dean Berry Hagmann (85) passed away 8/7/20. He worked at INL, where he designed and developed remote handling technologies that are still being used today to handle radioactive fuels and assemble/disassemble experimental technologies. In 1982 he left Idaho Falls, and continued to work in design and project management in the nuclear industry in Oak Ridge TN, Indonesia, Del Mar CA, and Richland WA. He retired from the DOE Hanford Facility in 1999.

Beverly Grace Streeper (88) passed away 8/8/20. She worked at INL, EG&G’s Waste Management division and then moved to Engineering and Project Management working there until she left in 1987.

Terry L. Betz (74) passed away 8/10/20. Terry worked at INL for 35 years, holding positions in operations, management and training during his career. Terry started his career in the mailroom and it ended with him being one of the Country’s recognized experts in Nuclear Safety Training and the Systematic Approach to Training.

Jacob Cornell Johnston (87) passed away 8/10/20. He worked at DOE as a Senior Auditor.

John Van Eps (94) passed away 8/11/20. He worked for AEC for 35 years retiring in 1991.

Helen Hancock Jensen (88) passed away 8/12/20. She worked at INL, retiring in 1995.

Joseph Ray Fielding (85) passed away 8/16/20. He worked at INL as a Nuclear Physicist for many years and eventually as a Nuclear Safety Manger. He authored a publication following experimental tests to identify the trajectory, quantity and identity of each radioisotope released from water being interjected into a nuclear reactor; these tests confirmed many theoretical aspects of potential effects of small space reactors crashing to earth.

Clyde Hammond (92) passed away 10/8/20. He worked at INL working his way up to become the Manager of Transportation.

Benjamin R. Hunter (91) passed away 10/10/20. He worked at INL, ICPP, as a radiochemist. At the time of his retirement he was the longest running employee of the INL having worked 51.5 years.

Donna Sue Stoll Parrish (88) passed away 10/10/20. She worked at INL, EG&G as an Executive Secretary.

Stanley Verl Ottley (91) passed away 10/12/20. He worked at INL, he started at Westinghouse in 1959 and worked there for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Laurence ‘Larry’ Scott Beller (90) passed away 10/14/20. He began in 1966 with Argonne National Lab and moved to EG&G leading a research team in the Nondestructive Evaluation group in the Materials Science Directorate retiring in 1996. Many in the community know Larry was an incredible and much-loved Boy Scout leader and an advocate for Girl Scouts with his beloved wife, Dot.

Harry Henze (93) passed away 10/17/20. He worked from 1981-1992 for EG&G at the Loss of Fluid Test (LOFT) facility at TAN, and in Waste Management Programs at TAN.

Larry Wheeler (67) passed away 10/17/20. He was an active employee of INL working in org J310 at CFA. He was hired as a laborer. He eventually went through training and became a journeymen electrician, then later on was hired as a power dispatcher, which was the current position he held. Larry was active in the INL union, and was in the union presidency.

Phillip Ray Jackson (89) passed away 10/21/20. He worked at INL as a process operator for 29 years.

James Gerald Kraupp (82) passed away 10/22/20. In 1975, James had an opportunity to start his career at the INL Nuclear Site in Arco, Idaho. He started with Westinghouse Electric at NRF, first as a Reproduction Operator in the print shop. In 1979, he became an Armed Guard working for the Security Services at NRF. In 1980, and for the next 19 years he worked in Operations Material Control, setting up many inventory programs. He retired in 1999.

John Alvin Yeates Jr. (101) passed away 11/1/20. He worked at INL from 7/14/51-1/29/81 as an electrical engineer at the National Reactor Testing Station (now Idaho National Laboratory) west of Idaho Falls until retirement in 1981. His proudest achievement was succeeding in designing and managing the power line connection of a small nuclear-powered electrical generator to temporarily provide power directly to the town of Arco, Idaho in 1954. As part of President Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” program, this demonstration became an historic milestone that helped launch the nuclear power industry.

December 2020

Michael Vargo (91) passed away 2/2/20. During his early career as an electrical engineer with the Westinghouse-Bettis Atomic Power Division in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania he was involved in building the first nuclear-powered U.S. Navy surface vessels, the USS Long Beach missile-cruiser (CGN-9) and the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) aircraft carrier, the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), USS Nimitz (CVN-68), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), and USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601). In 1970, he transferred to Idaho Falls to head the AIW Modification Project at the Naval Reactors Facility for the Atomic Energy Commission at the NRTS by Westinghouse. Mike transferred to EG&G working as manager of Test Reactor Technical Support, Power Reactors Special Projects Office, and Program Operations & Evaluation. He also oversaw Occupational Safety and Health Act (OHSA) at the site, the cornerstone legislation for workplace health and safety, and consulted in clean-up audits at Three Mile Island and Rocky Flats. He retired in 1995.

Kay L. Johnson (82) passed away 12/3/20. He worked for several groups during his time at INL – as an industrial safety engineer for ENICO and WINCO from 1981 until 1984, then for EG&G from 1985 through 1995 in Health & Safety, Performance Assurance Tech. Support, Science & Technology, and ES&Q Requirements. He wrote the safety manual on hoisting and rigging which is still in use today. He worked at INL for 30 years.

Elmo Wayne Killian (78) passed away 12/11/20. He worked at INL as a Computer Software Engineer.

Louis LaMoyne Marsden (91) passed away 12/11/20. He worked for ENICO and WINCO in several organizations: Finance & Administration, Safeguards & Security, Security Projects, and Quality & Performance Assessment. He retired in 1996.

Larry Roland Watson (77) passed away 12/11/20. He worked at INL as a Project Manager, retiring in 2001.

William ‘Bill’ Hansen (82) passed away 12/12/20. He worked at INL on infrastructure development projects.

Brian Kent Morishita (71) passed away 12/13/20. He worked at INL for nearly 40 years. He was a business systems analyst, business systems manager, and financial planner for multiple INL organizations. From 1996 to 2012, he was the executive director of the Financial Management Systems Integration Council for improving government financial management effectiveness. Finally, he worked at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies on a team that reviewed and selected new and innovative proposals for cutting edge research. He retired in 2015.

Francis Harrison (83) passed away 12/14/20. He worked for Argonne National Lab for 10 years as a purchasing agent.

Donald Peterson Biggs (75) passed away 12/17/20. He worked at INL as a nuclear pipe welder.

Marshall Kay Lambson (75) passed away 1/22/19. He worked at INL as a radiological control technician.

Jimmy ‘Jim’ G. Crocker (86) passed away 1/23/19. He worked at INL from 6/8/55-9/29/92. He was a renowned nuclear physicist. He began his long career at SPERT, and went on to manage the Power Burst Facility, the Fusion Safety Program, the Energy Programs Group, the Advanced Nuclear Programs Group and the New Program Development Department. One of the highlights of his career was serving as a United States ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency. With an office at the United Nations in Vienna, Jim provided expertise on fusion safety to reactor research programs around the world. He retired from the INL in 1992, but continued to work as a consultant for ITER, the world’s largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment.

Neil A. DePue (92) passed away 2/2/19. He worked at INL from 4/16/62-8/30/87 at the Chemical Processing Plant as a laboratory technician and later as a property management specialist. Neil retired from INL in the 1990s.

Karl W. Griffin (61) passed away 2/3/19. He was an active employee of INL, working for org D710 as an Operation Facility Technical Specialist. He worked for INL from 6/19/78 to present.

Verle S. Metcalf (93) passed away 2/3/19. He began working for Phillips Petroleum and other various site contractors in the Human Resources and Salary Administration departments. He also worked in San Diego for Rohr Aircraft Manufacturers and in Washington DC for the Department of Energy.

John C. Commander (94) passed away 2/14/19. He began his civil engineering career at INL 4/25/55, working for Aerojet, EG&G, and Bechtel. Upon retirement 7/30/86, he was a consultant to Princeton University Physics Department to help build the first Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor. John was a founding member of IREA and served the organization as a board member and president.

Russ started his career at Allied Chemical in New Jersey in 1953 and transferred to INL in 1967 with Idaho Nuclear Corporation – Allied Chemical was part of that Corporation. He worked at INL from 6/1/67-1/30/95. He worked for many years as a chemical engineer and manager in research programs for several Chemical Processing Plant contractors.

Cindy Jo Copeland (65) passed away 3/29/19. She worked at INL-CWI, where she started as a laborer and through hard work and determination eventually held multiple management positions and leadership roles. After 25 years of service she retired in 2008.

Frances Adeline Hall (98) passed away 4/3/19. She worked at INL from 12/22/95-9/23/82 as a teletype operator at AEC and eventually became supervisor over the teletype communications of the INEL. She wrote an operations manual that became the standard procedure manual for all of the DOE. She also did volunteer work for the police department and EICAP.

Marj was active in many community organizations and a proud member of the American Legion Post 56 serving on the Memorial Team for many years. She served her country in the US Marine Corps in WWII.

Tracy A. Langenwalter (61) passed away 4/14/19. He was an active employee working in Org J211 as an engineering manager, he started 11/28/77 to present.

Scott Herbst (60) passed away 4/14/19. He was an active employee working in Org C410. Scott started working at INL in June 1989. Early in his career his efforts in separation technologies led to national and international collaborations in the nuclear industry. His work as a Fellow in the Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate included critical materials recovery and nuclear fuel cycle research and development. Highlights of his career included a R&D 100 Award, INL Lab Director’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and numerous patents and publications.

Pauline M. Seek (100) passed away 4/17/19. She worked at INL as a secretary from 8/17/56-6/29/80.

Gerry L. Jones (76) passed away 4/17/19. He worked at INL for Bettis Atomic Power Lab at the Naval Reactors Facility. Bettis sent him to Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh for six years, then he returned to the INL.  His next challenge was with Bechtel in Sanford, MI, where he spent 5 years. He returned to Idaho in 1986 to DOE-ID, then INL (CWI) for the rest of his career. He retired in 2012.

Douglas Ericson (93) passed away 5/27/19. He was assigned to Idaho in 1962, where he worked closely with Argonne West on EBR-II, ZPPR, and TREAT, and with other contractors on reactors in Idaho, Colorado, and California. He eventually joined Argonne West as head of operations. A high point of his career was certifying the safety of the EBR-1 for the Secret Service before President Lyndon Johnson affixed a commemorative plaque to the reactor in 1966.

In 1978 the family moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where Millard accepted a research position at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. With the desire to teach again, Millard accepted a teaching position at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota from 1981-1983, until funding was more stable at the INEL and he returned to continue research there. He retired from research work in 1989.

Melvin ‘Marx’ L. Hintze (80) passed away 7/15/19. He worked at INL from 10/18/77-5/31/88. Marx was well known for his contributions in the space age. He led teams and engineered critical components for the very first spacecraft that landed on Mars, Viking 1 & 2. He also engineered critical components of the Voyager 1 & 2 spacecraft in 1977 which to this day are still operating and have left the solar system. Traveling at speeds faster than 38,000 M_H through interstellar space, they contain a gold record of the sounds and pictures of the people of earth. He was often seen wearing a NASA hat that said, “Failure is not an option”.

Steven J. Fernandez (66) passed away 7/15/19. He worked at INL from 7/5/77-2/20/03. He was employed as a leading researcher and project manager at several national labs.

Roger L. Allen (59) passed away 7/15/19. He worked at INL from 5/22/84-5/24/12 as an electrician.

Stephen W. Farkas (98) passed away 7/16/19. In 1955 he took a job with Westinghouse Electric Corp where he taught radiological safety to US Navy submarine personnel, including crews from the USS Nautilus. In Sept 1967 he left Westinghouse to join the Dept of Energy-Idaho Operations Safety Division where he was responsible for coordination of the Radiological Assistance Plan for the five-state DOE Region 6. He remained with the DOE for 22 years, retiring December 1989.

Raymond D. Baird (94) passed away 8/11/19. He worked at INL from 10/29/56-9/29/86.

Roger A. Richardson (75) passed away 8/13/19. He worked at INL from 5/30/79-6/24/01, as an Electrical Engineer working on and tested the first electric car. He worked for Martin-Marietta Denver, where he worked on the Viking 1 & 2, the very first space craft that landed on Mars. He worked on the Voyager 1 & 2 which went to Jupiter, has left the solar system, and is still working to this day.

Max Boyd Covington (87) passed away 8/17/19. He was primarily working for contractors at the site and the last 20 years he worked for the government on a special project for the Army.

Michael ‘Mike’ D. Peters (76) passed away 8/17/19. He worked at INL from 6/6/67-2/25/98. He started working at Bettis Atomic Power Lab in 1967 and then transferred to NRF in Idaho and qualified as an operator of the A1W prototype power plant. Subsequently, he transferred to the INL and worked on multiple assignments, including the L.O.F.T. Project and the Three Mile Island cleanup in Harrisburg, PA, retiring in 1998.

Dr. Richard ‘Jake’ T. Jacobsen (77) passed away 8/20/19. Jake was seconded to INL (BBWI) from the University of Idaho serving as INL’s Chief Scientist. He worked here from 10/1/1999 to 1/31/2005. During his more than fifty-year career, Jake served in several administrative roles and conducted international collaborative research at the U of I, Idaho State University, and the Idaho National Laboratory.

Garth C. McGary (95) passed away 8/23/19. He worked at the Atomic Energy Commission from 1950-1956 as a fireman.

Bruce L. Hunt (60) passed away 8/25/19. He worked at INL as a warehouseman from 11/8/77-9/28/16.

Stanley L. Palmer (68) passed away 9/8/19. He worked at INL as an architect from 3/2/81-10/1/06, then moved to CWI, retiring in 2016. He was the first licensed architect hired at INL and later became the chief architect. One of his favorite projects was a building, for which he won an award, which included an 8’ wall to retain solar heat and save on energy costs.

David L. Brown (79) passed away 9/9/19. He worked at INL as an Electrical Engineer from 6/5/02-6/6/05, and then moved on to Argonne-W.

Delmar Anderson (87) passed away 9/10/19. He drove bus for the Atomic Energy Division of the Phillips Petroleum Company.

Michael W. Petersen (64) passed away 9/11/19. He worked at NRF for the past 30 years as a water pit tech, and for the last several years, he was a Quality Inspector.

Gary O. Lee (79) passed away 9/12/19. He worked at INL from 6/16/86-8/15/90.

Jay L. Hawkes (86) passed away 9/14/19. He worked at INL, as well as Basic American Foods and Union Pacific Railroad.

Tilford E. McAffee (95) passed away 9/15/19. He worked at INL from 12/1/56-7/30/90 working for the Atomic Energy Commission. He was on the survey crew for many years and ended his working career at the Site as a Reactor Operator at PBF.

Charles ‘Chuck’ J. Cavanaugh (99) passed away 9/16/19. Chuck worked more than 35 years as an Electrical Engineer for various contractors at the National Reactor Testing Station and INL from 7/9/56-4/29/82.

Teri (Therese) Marie Dawson (73) passed away 9/22/19. She worked at INL from 4/6/67-1/29/81. She took a job at the NRTS working closely with design engineers. It was there that she discovered her own interest in art and a particular passion for drafting and lettering which led her to become a Graphic Artist herself. Teri used her impeccable attention to detail in everything she did. There was not a single thing she could not figure out, devise, or fashion a plan for-especially if she had a ruler or a protractor on hand.

Laurent “Larry” Chigbrow (64) passed away 9/22/19. He worked as a Chemical Engineer at the Chemical Processing Plant from 8/15/77-9/5/02.

Clyde R. Blessinger (95) passed away 9/22/19. He worked at INL from 3/27/67-2/1/81.

Donald D. Denier (77) passed away 9/23/19. He worked at INL from 9/28/81-5/4/00 as a Technical Writer. Later in his career he supported Waste Management working on the Decontamination & Decommissioning plan for the Chemical Processing Plant.

Roland E. Felt (83) passed away 9/25/19. He worked at the Hanford Site near Richland, Washington, where he helped develop chemical processing capacity in the nuclear field and became a leading expert on plutonium fires and process safety. He later returned to Idaho Falls where he worked at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory from 2/2/87-1/30/95, and for the Department of Energy, where he ended his distinguished scientific career.

Dean L Roberts Jr. (72) passed away 9/28/19. Dean worked as an Engineer for the INL from 11/24/97-10/1/06, then moved to CWI and retired in 2012.

Gary W. Johnsen (74) passed away 9/29/19. In 1966 he took a position with the Grumman Aerospace corporation working on the Apollo Program Lunar Module project. In 1968, he relocated to Houston’s Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center), where Gary worked on a series of final tests of the Lunar Module leading to the subsequent moon landings. In 1970, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon as a member of the Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team. In early 1971, he accepted a position with Martin Marietta Corp in Denver, Colorado, where he worked on the thermal performance analyses for the Skylab and Space Shuttle programs. In August 1974 Gary accepted a position with Aerojet Nuclear Co. at the National Reactor Testing Station, now the Idaho National Laboratory. It was here that he would embark on a long career in the nuclear reactor safety analysis. Throughout the 1970s, Gary was engaged in computer simulation and analysis of light water reactor accident behavior in support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Energy, utilizing the RELAP4 computer code. During the 1980s he managed the planning and analysis of experiments in the Semiscale reactor simulation facility. In the early 1990s, he joined the team working on the development of the RELAP5 computer code, a hallmark product of the INL now utilized around the world as the premier reactor safety analysis program. He managed the RELAP5 program until his retirement on 3/20/2007. Gary served as the IREA Energy Education chairman for several years prior to his passing.

He took great pride in knowing he was helping to build such a great machine that would help protect those who served this country.

Waldron C. ‘Jerry’ Townsend (86) passed away 10/23/19.  After working briefly at the Hanford nuclear site and Westinghouse Pittsburgh, he came to INL in 1972 and worked in the EG&G Engineering Analysis group for 15 years. Then he transferred to the WINCO Safety Analysis group in 1987 where he worked until retirement in 1995. Jerry was active in IREA in its early years, organizing the IREA golf tournament and providing advice on investments.

John Packebush (70) passed away 10/27/19. He worked at INL as a pipefitter from 5/15/84-8/7/89, and from 4/1/02-retiring CWI in 2007.

Daniel T. Kelley (96) passed away 10/30/19. He worked at INL from 1/26/77-9/23/82. In April 1951 he moved to Glendale, OH, where he joined General Electric Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Project as a mechanical engineer. He transferred to Idaho Falls in Feb. 1958. He was laid off in 1965. In the late ’60s he lived in Ohio to finish his time with GE, then moved back to Idaho Falls where he has lived ever since. He worked for Industrial Contractors, Inc. as Chief Engineer as a Cost Estimator. In the late ’70’s, he joined EG&G as a Cost Estimator. He worked for Freitas-Lancaster, Inc. in the same capacity before retiring in the mid 1980’s.

Ellen Kay Doherty (78) passed away 10/31/19. She worked at INL from 6/6/88-8/6/02 in public relations and was a member of the Rad Team and Emergency Response Unit.

Don W. Marshall (83) passed away 10/31/19. He worked at INL from 12/16/58-1/30/95, working in the EG&G Health & Safety group at TAN, EG&G Personnel Assurance Tech. Support (PATS), EG&G Environmental Safety & Quality (ESQ), and EG&G Performance Oversight Assessment (POA).

John Harley Burroughs (81) passed away 11/4/19. John served in the military as an Aviation Ordnanceman and served during the Vietnam War. He retired as a chief after 23 years of active duty. Upon discharge, went to work for the INL. He then went to Phoenix, Arizona where he worked at Luke Air Force Base. His entire working career was spent as an aviation ordnanceman.

Barbara R. Lowe (83) passed away 11/1/19. She worked at INL from 8/20/79-1/30/95. Barbara broke gender barriers and became a very skilled machinist, working in a male-dominated field.

Kathleen A. Asbell (75) passed away 11/8/19. She worked at INL from 8/1/84-5/27/04, working her way up to Project Manager, managing million-dollar projects and a team of engineers.

Donald L. Schurman (79) passed away 2/22/18. He worked for INL from 1984 until retirement, at EG&G-NRR&T. He was a human factor researcher, and his work had a major impact on the nuclear industry, most especially his work in human error that shaped human reliability analysis, which in turn made commercial nuclear plants safer for all. Don also had many major publications that significantly contributed to the field and he was always there to help the junior researchers learn about the field and how excellent research should be done. He could always be depended on for thoughtful, innovative contributions and was a valued and well-respected colleague.

Orin E. Marcum (97) passed away 5/24/18. He began his career with the Argonne National Laboratory. He worked on the EBR-1 Breeder Reactor as a reactor operator. He was on the team that produced the first electrical power to come from a nuclear reactor plan. He retired in 1984 after 33 years.

Elmo D. Crooks (93) passed away 5/25/18. He worked at the INL from 9/30/59-7/30/86.

Harold Ralph Orme (88) passed away 5/29/18. He began working at the INL from 2/19/59-1/30/95.

Fred W. Dykes (90) passed away 5/30/18. He worked at INL from 6/4/52-1/28/93. Fred earned his degree in chemistry from Idaho State University and spent his entire career at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. He worked to improve plant capability, increase operator safety and mitigate environmental impacts. Fred and his colleagues published many papers dealing with innovative and technological advances in the safe handling of radioactive materials. Fred’s technical career lasted 41 years.

Allied Chemical Corp. was operating the Chem Plant in the mid-1970s when he moved with them to South Carolina to work on Allied’s Barnwell fuel reprocessing plant. This plant was never finished, so Mick moved back to Idaho and rejoined the Chem Plant in 1983, working in Projects.

Armando Alberico (88) passed away 7/3/18. In 1962 he moved his family to Idaho Falls for a position at the National Reactor Testing Station, starting as a technician and worked his way into an engineering position, retiring in 1992.

Robert Rohrdanz (85) passed away 7/18/18. He worked at INL from 3/9/76-4/28/88. After working on LOFT and several other challenging programs, he accepted an assignment as an exchange engineer at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) in Japan. In addition to his regular duties there, he had soon volunteered to teach conversational English to fellow employees and to local high school students.

Colleen Stander (67) passed away 7/23/18. She worked at INL for 34 years starting as an administrative assistant working for the Nondestructive Evaluation group. She worked hard to further her education which culminated with a Master’s Degree from the University of Idaho. She then worked as a scientist in Environmental Management. She was credentialed as a Registered Environmental Manager and a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.

Carl M. Stoots (57) passed away 9/23/18 from a climbing accident, he was an active INL employee, beginning his career with INL 1/15/90. He worked as a Directorate Fellow and department manager of the Nuclear Science & Technology, Thermal Sciences and Safety Analysis Department at the Idaho National Laboratory. Carl was an internationally recognized researcher with over one hundred publications and four patents. He was awarded the INL Laboratory Director’s Award for Exceptional Engineering Achievement, the Federal Laboratory Consortium Outstanding Technology Department award and the Stoel Rives Innovation award for energy technology for his work in high-temperature co-electrolysis. Carl was an invited international researcher at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics, University of Erlangen, Germany.

Dr. Leon Forman (79) passed away 10/20/18, former INL nuclear scientist from 9/15/86-9/29/92. He was a recipient of the Department of Energy’s National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal in 1987, Dr. Forman was also co-recipient with his INL colleagues of two R&D 100 awards during his time in Idaho Falls. Presented annually by R&D Magazine, the awards acknowledge the 100 most technologically significant new products of the year. Both awards recognized the INL teams for their work in arms control technologies: the PINS Chemical Assay System in 1992 and the Gamma Neutron Assay System in 1995. He was a U.S. Army veteran and former U.S. Department of Energy employee, Dr. Forman also led the test special project group at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and worked as a consultant at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He was also nominated for the E.O. Lawrence Award in 1978 and authored the 2014 book, At the End of Nuclear Weapons Development.

He began his career as a chemical engineer at Phillips Petroleum in Phillips, Texas, and transferred to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1954 where he continued work for Phillips and several other companies that conducted nuclear research for the Atomic Energy Commission and Idaho National Engineering Laboratories.

Ralph Horton (82) passed away 3/30/17. Ralph taught at Washington State University from 1961-1976 and then moved his family to Idaho Falls for a job with INEL (Idaho National Engineering Laboratory) from 1975-1982. He then moved his family to Murray, Utah, after he took a job with Christensen Diamond Products in 1982 where he worked until his retirement in 1999.

He retired in 1986. He had a passion for recycling all types of items and baking bread. He always shared his finds and mini-bread loaves with his INL friends.

Milton John “Jack” Barnett (73) died 10/19. He worked at the INL as an Instrument Technician for 39 years.

William Phillip Polkinghorn (85) died 10/22/16.He worked at the INL for Westinghouse in the ECF Engineering Group and with Aerojet Nuclear Company as a Senior Engineer in the Design Engineering Branch.

Melvin Richard “Mel” Daniel Sr. (84) died 10/25/16. He worked at the INL as a Security Officer for Bechtel.

Ross Kent Christiansen (39) died 19/26/16. He worked at the INL for 10 years.

Donald “Don” Combs (85) died 10/26/16. He worked at the INL as Mechanical Engineer for 30 years. His positions included Technician Supervisor, Project Engineer, and Manager of the Energy Management Department. He was honored with DOE’s Outstanding Employee of The Year award. In retirement Don was active in IREA taking photographs at all social functions he attended.

Donald Dee Streett (80) died 11/29/16. He worked at the INL for Westinghouse Naval Reactors Facility for 30 years. He finished his career as Operation Manager for ECF.

Danial Michael Howard (43) died 12/5/16. He worked at the INL as Super Computer Administrator. He excelled at every level at the INL winning several awards and recognition for solving the unsolvable.

Robert “Bob” Irvin Jones (83) died 12/7/16. He worked at the INL for 35 years.

Billie Nordstrom Dean (93) died 12/7/16. She worked at the INL.

Neldon Grant Porter (91) died 12/8/16. He worked at the INL for many years and retired from there.

Lawrence “Larry” Anthony Corsini (76) died 12/13/16 He worked at the INL for Argonne National Laboratory.

Evelyn Aline “Rusty” Broughton (72) died 12/16/16. She worked in the INL Medical Department as a mental health counselor in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Richard Fredrick “Dick” Farman (81) died 12/20/16. He worked at the INL.

John Danz died in December 2016. He worked at the INL for 33 year and retired in 1994.
